Designed by Serie Architects, with waiwai design acting as Consultant Architects and providing Site Supervision, Jameel Arts Centre is designed to be a catalyst and hub for Dubai’s creative community.
Overlooking Dubai Creek and situated on Culture Village, the building results from shifting cubic volumes of varying dimensions. Manipulating the volumes creates a series of courtyard spaces, which flood the interior spaces with natural light. The courtyards also offer opportunities for visitors to pause amongst gardens featuring a wide variety of plants from different deserts of the world, as designed by landscape architect Anouk Vogel. The large transparencies of the northern façade present striking views of Dubai Creek, revealed to the visitors as they circulate through the building and move between exhibition spaces. The abundant natural light plays upon the various floor finishes and creates multiple interior atmospheres, providing flexible conditions for displaying different types of art. To augment the cubic volumes, a colonnade surrounds the building’s perimeter, which works in tandem with a public promenade to connect visitors to the neighbouring Jaddaf Waterfront Sculpture Park, also by waiwai.
