Jakarta, Indonesia
In a time when the majority of the world lives in urban areas, it is up to cities, not rural areas, to solve global environmental issues. The target of the Jakarta Model project is to reconsider a new model of living within Jakarta, Indonesia, which is one of the biggest cities in mid-South Asia.
After conducting extensive research, our proposal highlights two zones of interest: “inner edge” and “outer edge”. “Outer edge” can be classified as a new suburban area experiencing a drastic population increase on the exterior periphery of Jakarta. Within many of these new residential development areas, particularly in middle class areas, old villages (“Kampong”) continue to exist and function in spite of the new developments around them. Thus, Jakarta Model became a planned urban intervention for how to accommodate old villages within new suburban developments, changing environmental factors, and new styles of living.
